ACCORDING
TO THE SCRIPTURES
Paul,
an apostle of Jesus Christ, referred often to the standard
used in his preaching. "Moreover, brethren, I declare
unto you the gospel which I preached
unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I
preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For
I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received,
how that Christ died for our sins according
to the scriptures; And that he was buried,
and that he rose again the third day according
to the scriptures" (I Cor. 15:1-4). He
emphasized his trust in this standard again in Romans 1:16,17,
when he said "For I am not ashamed of the gospel
of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation
to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also
to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed
from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live
by faith." The Thessalonians were reminded that "we
were bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel
of God ", and that "as we were allowed
of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even
so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God,
which trieth our hearts" (I Thess. 2:2,4). We could
continue to quote like statements from Paul, but that is
unnecessary to prove his emphasis on the gospel as the one
and only standard to be preached.
Contrast
Paul's statements with those we hear from who preachers
and professed Christians in our society.

We can't understand the bible alike.
- We
don't need authority for everything we do in the church.
- One
church is as good as another.
- Everyone
has a right to their own belief (faith).
- Unity
in Diversity.
- One
name is as good as another.
- Etc.,
Etc., Etc.
Those
in the first century church were careful to appeal to the gospel
(scriptures) for what they believed and practiced. Today an
appeal for bible authority brings condemnations of being narrow
minded. Was Paul narrow minded? Was Christ to strict? By what
reasoning do we change the teaching of Christ and His inspired
apostles? Why has our nation become one where the gospel is
so often read, yet so little practiced. It's time to say with
Paul "And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the
name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father
by him" (Col. 3:17).
